In the 2010s, the Common Core introduced the idea of close reading to elementary reading instruction. The idea of close reading is to make sense of a text and how the text exercises its effects by a thorough and careful analysis of the information in the text itself. This essay makes the case for continuing to include close reading as part of a sound program of reading comprehension instruction.
